The Johannesburg Cochlear Implant Centre was founded in 2009, even though the cochlear implant programme first began in 1992.

JCIC acts as the administrative hub for the Johannesburg Cochlear Implant Programme (JCIP) to facilitate multi-disciplinary team management of paediatric and adult cochlear implant recipients.

The multi-disciplinary team consists of ENT surgeons, audiologists and speech therapists, who specialise in the field of cochlear implantation and habilitation/rehabilitation of the cochlear implant recipients.  The team work with outside professionals such as occupational therapists, physio therapists, neuro-developmental paediatricians etc.

JCIC delivers a service to prospective cochlear implants recipients in the larger Johannesburg area, as well as to prospective recipients residing in Africa, beyond the borders  of South-Africa.

JCIC also has a specialised Auditory Brainstem Implant Team. The first auditory brainstem implant at JCIC was done successfully in October 2016.
